Rapid response resolves breakdown at UK site

The Holland-Controls Services team recently delivered a fast and effective resolution to a breakdown at a long-standing UK customer site. The facility operates two RB211 gas compressors equipped with FT125 control systems.

The team was called out urgently to investigate repeated shutdowns on Unit A due to a VIGV Position Controller Delayed Shutdown during load attempts. The root cause was traced to an error in the VIGV position feedback.

A calibration check revealed that the RVDT (Rotary Variable Differential Transformer) was reading 10.9% off at the mid-position. The team adjusted the RVDT, recalibrated the system, and updated the ECS software with the corrected values.

However, initial restart attempts failed due to signal spikes from the Y-axis vibration probe on the PT drive end, occurring even before the engine rotated. Replacing the proximeter for this input resolved the issue.

Following these corrections, the unit was successfully started, and a dynamic check of the VIGV control confirmed proper operation.

The unit was returned to full production within 24 hours of the team’s arrival on site.
