Holland-Controls has engineered and delivered 3x control systems for our customer’s compressor station in Scotland.
Controlling 3x LM2500+DLE packages (made by two different packagers), the control system solution provided by HC comprised of a Woodward MicroNet+ fuel governor (with OEM approved core logic), a Rockwell ControlLogix package control system, a Bently Nevada 3500 vibration monitoring system and a novel hardwired protection system which was developed jointly with our customer.
As a consequence of HC providing the control systems for this project, the customer wins by having a modern and easy to maintain control system, along with a consistent control platform with common spare parts and control philosophies across the 3x units which historically had 2 totally different control platforms.
In addition to the auxiliary and sequence control logic, HC’s advanced compressor surge control software is implemented – allowing the customer to run their compressors at their optimal operating point in a safe and stable manner.

Some consider it taking a step back in time to the 1950’s, however without argument a hardwired protection system has some advantages. Firstly it is immune to the growing threat of cyber attacks. Secondly, as it is made up of a quantity of standard, off the shelf components, which means that there are always spare parts available.
With these advantages come some disadvantages – namely the increased difficulty in faultfinding and the larger physical footprint that the system occupies. In the name of national critical infrastructure and by having an experienced team on site, the benefits outweighs the downsides for this customer.
As part of this project, HC provided new fuel metering valves, high speed shutoff valves and interstage vent valves. The fuel metering valve assemblies contained OEM designed flow legs including dual upstream and downstream pressure transducers for high accuracy fuel metering and availability.
